CLIMATE CHANGE, COMPASSION AND PRIORITIES

Hurricane Sandy has wreaked her vengeance on the Northeast.  The storm was devastating,  leaving thousands homeless and shivering.  The fires at Breezy Point, NY, fanned on by Sandy's winds, tore through the middle class neighborhood leaving behind nothing but a few chimney stacks and the ghostly impression of post-WWII Europe.  The devastation was widespread and heartbreaking.  Even the famed Atlantic City Boardwalk didn't survive the power of the sea.  My thoughts and prayers are with those who are suffering, friends and family among them.  But there's one thing I know about Northeasterners.  They will get through this (granted, probably with a good deal of cursing), and they will come out of it stronger than before.

As usual, Al gore is out promoting global warming again, attempting to link Hurricane Sandy to the church doctrine science he has been promoting for more than a decade.  On a certain level, you really can't blame the guy for trying - if I stood to become a billionaire upon passage of certain climate change laws, I'd be pushing the theory every chance I got, too.  But even so, the fact is people are hurting, and blowhards like Mr. Gore and Mayor Bloomberg expostulating on how we have brought this destruction down on our own heads somehow (and there's more - and worse - to come) does no good to the people who have lost everything and don't even know where their next hot meal is coming from.

The problem for Al is that, as bad as Sandy was, in the grand scheme she was really just par for the course, insofar as frequency and strengths of hurricanes striking the Northeast goes.  That the damage is so severe is more a testament to an overpopulated coastline, our crumbling infrastructure, and an unfortunate tendency to brush off such approaching storms as non-events than to an excessively vengeful Mother Nature bent on extracting a pound of flesh.

In 1985, Hurricane Gloria bounced around the Atlantic basin for twelve days.  It hit the coast of North Carolina first, but instead of moving inland, the storm was pushed back out into the Atlantic, whereupon it set it's sights on Long Island, NY.  After cutting a devastating path across the island, it again made landfall for the third and final time in Connecticut.  Eight people lost their lives, and the storm cost taxpayers about $2 billion in today's dollars.

In 1960. Hurricane Donna struck Marathon and Ft. Meyers, FL, coastal North Carolina and, finally, the eastern end of Long Island.

In 1954, New York was hit not once but twice.  Hurricane Hazel tore through Battery Park with wind gusts up to 113 mph followed by Hurricane Carol, which struck eastern Long Island and produced gusts of 120 mph.  The storm surge wiped out a portion of the Montaugh Highway, which cut off the eastern portion of the Island.

In 1944, the Great Atlantic Hurricane ripped through Long Island, killing six.

The New England Hurricane of 1938, also known as the "Long Island Express", caused massive property damage throughout New England and claimed more than six hundred lives.

The list goes on, back through time, all the way to the Great Storm of 1683, whose winds and storm surge created the Fire Island Cut.

And that's just New York.  As for New Jersey, my home state has been relatively sheltered from major storms, but she, too has suffered the wrath of Mother Nature:

The Storm of October 1804 struck Atlantic City as a Category 2 hurricane.

The Great September Gale of 1815 did not technically make landfall in New Jersey, but still managed to wreak havoc as it made it's way up the coastline.

1821 brought the Norfolk and Long Island Hurricane that made landfall at Cape May, NJ.  While the town was devastated by the winds and storm surge, the surrounding areas were, thankfully, sparsely populated, minimizing damage.

The Gale of 1878 caused eight deaths and significant damage to western New Jersey.

There is even geological evidence that a major storm struck the coastline as much as a hundred years before Europeans colonized the area in the 1500s.

My point being that the East Coast has long suffered hurricanes and tropical storms - predating even the Industrial Revolution.  I was living on Long Island in 1985; Gloria's eye passed over my town.  Power was out for weeks, but we were lucky because we hadn't lost water.  In some areas along the eastern tip of the Island suffered without power and/or water for upwards of a month.  It was a powerful storm.  But it wasn't unusual.

As for global warming, recent studies have shown that there actually has been no warming since 1998

When the Goracle and his acolytes point to warmer temperatures in the Atlantic Basin, he ignores the cooler temps in the Pacific, much like the Ross ice shelf's melting is constantly hyped by alarmists, but Arctic ice thickening is ignored.

Pointing to the high cost of disaster recovery as proof that storms are getting worse is fallacious.  Did anyone really think a hurricane hitting some of the nation's largest city centers would be cheap?  Did anyone really think few people would be impacted, when the region accounts for fully one-fifth of our population?  Do those two things have anything at all to do with global warming?

Instead of rending garments over the unproved theory of global warming, perhaps our leaders would be better used by putting their energy into helping the people impacted by forces well beyond the control of mere mortals.  The fact is, east coast hurricanes are not unheard of - in fact, we have quite a history of them - and we may well be entering a cycle that mirrors the very active 1950's.

The plight of those in New York and New Jersey and how they can be helped should be the only topic of discussion when it comes to this storm.  Cheap attempts at furthering the global warming narrative give cold comfort to those who have lost loved ones and are suffering without shelter, clothing or food.

HERE COMES TROUBLE

We've had friends visiting for the past week and yesterday we took them to a lovely central Florida secret - Wekiwa Springs.  It's a great place to go in the summer.  The spring is a cool 72 degress year round and bubbles up into a perfect, crystal clear swimming basin that is surrounded by an ampitheater-like grassy area that is great for picnics.

Today, however, was not a perfect day

Shortly after we got settled and the kids hit the water, I was approached by two people with clipboards.

"Hi there!  Do you support green energy?"  one chirped at me perkily.  I noticed their clipboards had :"Repower America" stickers on it.  Oh goodie - minions of the Goracle, out to preach to the masses.

Not wanting the day ruined with their "green" drivel, I politely told them I thought that we weren't ready for green energy yet and before they could try to sell me further, the fates smiled upon me and my cell phone rang. Saved by the bell!  It turns out they were going around getting info and signatures for letters to be sent to Florida's federal representatives demanding that they pass the pending Cap and Tax legislation

A little while later, they were talking to a group of teenagers who were sitting near me.  None of the kids were old enough to vote, but they were Florida residents, so that was good enough, apparently.  Those greenies sure do love uninformed youth!  The two envirovangelists started in on their spiel, talking about how important passing the legislation is.

It is a rare event to hear such bald-faced lies told so brazenly and with such conviction. Not only did they watch President Obama's speech the other night, they memorized it.  You name a talking point from that speech, and they brought it up.  Wind turbines - check.  Solar energy - check.  Dependence on foreign oil - check.

Then they started in on the gulf spill.  They blamed the evil oil companies, and asked, rhetorically, of course, why the kids thought they were drilling a mile under water and even further into the sea floor.  "As deep as Everest is high" was the quote.

At this point, I couldn't resist piping up with an answer - "because the environmentalists have pushed them out that deep".  Two of the kids looked over; one of them snickered into his hand.  Ms. Perky glared, took a breath and kept going.

According to her (and Obama, as per his speech), we are drilling into mile-deep water because we have no more oil anywhere else, and that this is our last resort for trying to stop billions of dollars going to foreign countries that don't like us because we stubbornly refuse to switch to green energy.  Confronted by that doozie, I was unable to clench my jaw fast enough to keep from blurting out "Well, that's an outright lie!"  More glares came my way, of course, and they started pushing harder for signatures.

Long story short, two of the kids signed on, two declined.  Ms. Perky and her partner in crime scurried off, glaring at me all the while, and I didn't see them for the rest of the afternoon.  The lady camped out in front of me turned and smiled at me, saying that she was going to step in and say something, too, if I hadn't beaten her to it.  She made it clear that if a discussion had ensued, she would have had my back.  I've been hearing that more and more these days.  I'm also hearing more and more people speaking up when confronted with such blatant misinformation.  It's a wonderful thing.

The level of lies misinformation is quite staggering, really.  It simply boggles the mind that these people are trying to say that we have no natural resources.  They are fond of saying that we use 20% of the world's oil each year, but only have 2% of the natural reserves.  Makes it seem like we're going to run out tomorrow, doesn't it?  Which is the point, really. Nothing like a little fear to sell  the agenda.  The Goracle has made a fortune off it, and stands to make a whole lot more.  So is it true?  According to Kiplinger Magazine, in a word, no:

The U.S. is sitting on the world's largest, untapped oil reserves -- reservoirs which energy experts know exist, but which have not yet been tapped and may not be attainable with current technology. In fact, such untapped reserves are estimated at about 2.3 trillion barrels, nearly three times more than the reserves held by Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) nations and sufficient to meet 300 years of demand -- at today's levels -- for auto, truck, aircraft, heating and industrial fuel, without importing a single barrel of oil.

Not all of the oil is readily available, but the amounts that are are quite startling (via American Thinker):

The report acknowledges that the available oil reserves could be much larger, but the 3.0 to 4.3 billion figure represents oil recoverable right now with today's technology. In fact, there may more than 100 billion barrels eventually recoverable with continued developments in the technology necessary to extract the oil.

Then there is the most famous government-blocked area of oil reserves, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuges (ANWR). With 10 billion barrels available, ANWR is the most accessible of the major untapped oil reserve locations in the United States, and claims are that this oil could be extracted in a way that would have minimal negative environmental impact.

So while technically correct in saying that America is running out of places to drill for oil, those who push this line of spin are being disingenuous at best.  The reason we are running out of places to drill is purely due to the environmentalists and their political cronies who are making it impossible for us to tap into our natural resources so that they can force us into green technologies that aren't ready for mass implimentation.

They are doing this by refusing to open up coastal areas for drilling, making ANWR off limits, and by confiscating massive tracts of land over inland oil reserves.  Quite frankly, the whole scheme is reprehensible.  They are willing to strangle us into submission to forward their green agenda, when salvation is right under our feet.  Freedom from foreign oil, freedom from funding those who hate us, and freedom to exploit our natural resources in a safe way until we can ease into green alternatives.

I have no gripe with going green, but the fact is that we are just not ready.  I am simply unwilling to allow Washington to cripple me with even more taxes to promote an unrealistic agenda that isn't ready for implimentation in a large city, let alone an entire country of 310 million.  I refuse to pay $10 a gallon for foreign oil when there are billions of untapped barrels right here in this country.  I object to my utility bill "necessarily skyrocketing" so that Obama and the Goracle can pat themselves on the back and get rich as our economy collapses under their unrealistic pipe dreams.

Am I disappointed that two of the kids signed the petition?  Not at all.  Before I piped up, all four had clipboards in hand, ready to sign on.  After all, if you oppose the green agenda, you're not only not cool, but you are practically an ecoterrorist.  The fact that I managed to put a kernel of doubt in two of those young minds was victory enough.  Hopefully they went home today and started checking the facts.  That's all we can do - speak up and hope that people take the initiative to look for the facts themselves.

Facts the government is fully aware of:

In fact, our own government has acknowledged the vast oil resources available to us. In an April 2008 study conducted by the United States Geological Survey, the group began its press release with the following: "North Dakota and Montana have an estimated 3.0 to 4.3 billion barrels of undiscovered, technically recoverable oil in an area known as the Bakken Formation."

Let's not forget, too, the roadblocks environmentalists have put up against many green alternatives, such as solar panels in the desert, wind turbines, ocean wave farms and nuclear power plants.  Apparently there are those in the movement who seem to think that the country can be powered by rainbows and unicorn flatulence, because they sure aren't leaving many other options.

The administration's attempt to politicize the oil spill to get a win for the agenda is shameless.  Not only won't Cap and Trade do anything to affect the spill or cleanup it is taking advantage of, it will also damage our already fragile economy with a dramatic increase in utility bills and taxes.  Unfortunately, Repower America and the various other appendages of the political elite are out in force and they are on a self-appointed mission to save the world.  The ground forces have been deployed and the push is on.  Pesky facts aren't going to stand in their way!

And on this one, don't expect a loss in November to stop them.

LIAR LIAR

As a mom, I've heard some real whoppers.  On the second day of preschool, my eldest came to me, limping.  "I can't go to school, Mom", she gasped out, her little face scrunched up, one hand grasping her leg.  "What's wrong, honey?  Why can't you go to school today?" I asked, concerned.  "I can't go to school today because I broke my leg" she moaned, bottom lip stuck out to really sell it.  Ooookaaay.  Get your coat on and get in the car, kid.

I learned two things that day - one, my child definitely has a career in the theater if she so chooses, and two, there is no lie too ridiculous for some people.  Now, my child was just 4 when she said this, so I will cut her some slack.

Unfortunately, there are people in high places whose mothers apparently never caught (or chose to ignore) their offspring's blatant fallacies.  This has to be the case, or else why would we have been subjected to the obvious whoppers that have been tossed out for our consumption just this past week.

Our first example of creative modification of the parameters of a situation comes from the Goracle himself, the High Priest of Gaia, Al Gore.  Mr. Gore has finally made a statement about ClimateGate.  So what excuse has Mr. Gore given for the fiasco that is ClimateGate?  He's had about three months to come up with something, so I'm sure it was worth the wait:

I, for one, genuinely wish that the climate crisis were an illusion. But unfortunately, the reality of the danger we are courting has not been changed by the discovery of at least two mistakes in the thousands of pages of careful scientific work over the last 22 years by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Okay, maybe not.

Only two mistakes, huh Al?  I think not.  Let's see - the Himalayan glaciers aren't going to disappear by 2035.  African agriculture is increasing, not decreasing.  The sea levels are not rising.  The rainforests are not at risk of becoming tropical savannahs.  Not only aren't the polar bears waning into extinction, their numbers have increased fivefold in the past 25 years.  The Arctic is not ice-free and most likely won't be for a long time.  Those issues I just mentioned are the foundation and pillars upon which the Gaia cult has been built.  The so-called 'scientists' involved in the scam have perverted the scientific process from one of empirical evidence, stringent peer review and theories proved by scientific fact into a quasi-religious ideology of hysterical what-if scenarios fobbed off as fact, alienation of skeptics to the point of ostracism and career destruction, and forcing facts (to the point of blatant fabrication) to support a theory.   BTW - this is a point of view now supported by none other that Phil Jones, the disgraced former head of the CRU.

Mr. Gore, you are lying.  You have been called out on it, and doubling down and pretending you wish it wasn't true doesn't make it so.  The scam has been exposed.    I myself would like to see hearings on this and see prosecutions of the scam artists at the center of it, Mr. Gore included.

Unfortunately, there seems to be an epidemic of liars on the liberal front.  The entire agenda seems to be falling apart, so they are all doubling down and blatantly lying in a vain effort to further their plans.

Take Nancy Pelosi for instance.  This weekend Queen Nan went on the talk show circuit and didn't just tell a strategic lie or two - it was more like a carpet-bombing expedition.  The lies were flying so fast and thick that it was a little difficult to keep it all straight.

The most stunning lie was her assertion that she and the Tea Partiers had 'common ground'.  I can only imagine the reaction of most tea partiers, but I for one, was utterly disgusted by the naked opportunism on display with that one.  With one breath she talks about them being astroturf, and with the next, they are her long-lost brethren.  Hey, wait...taken in that contex, maybe she's right.....

She spoke of fellow democrats giving up their careers to do what is best for Americans.  Easy for her to say, since the odds of her losing her seat are about the same as her stimulus bill creating a job - about 787 billion to one.  She says she is listening to the people and doing what is best for them.

She also mentioned a unique definition of 'bipartisan':

"Bipartisanship is a two-way street. A bill can be bipartisan without bipartisan votes. Republicans have left their imprint."

Fascinating.  The only imprint I can think the Republicans have left in regards to this bill is the imprint of their knuckles on the locked door behind which Madame Sneaker wrote the bill with her closest cronies.

The blatant lying is reminiscent of my four year old, clutching her leg and really trying to sell it that it was broken.  Sorry, honey, but I'm just not buying it.  Or, better yet, in words she will be able to understand:

"Liar, liar, pantsuit on fire".

EPA JUMPS THE SHARK

Okay, the EPA has officially jumped the shark

Am I the only one who has a problem with the EPA declaring my very existence - the subconscious action of breathing - to be a hazard to human health and to the environment?  How can a gas that we exhale and plants inhale be toxic?

I feel like I'm living in '1984'.  Someday, when the corporate money flow dries up from excessive green taxation, are they going to start counting our exhalations and tax us accordingly?  Yeah, it seems a little ridiculous, but, hey, the foot is in the door now, so you just never know....

What this is really all about is a back door to Cap and Trade.

The democrats know that Cap and Trade legislation is DOA.  The bill wasn't popular before ClimateGate; support is cratering now.

Al Gore's statement about AGW 'deniers' is classic projection (Hey Al - your desperation is showing):

The naysayers are in a sunset phase with a spectacular climax just before they subside from view.
Since the administration knows they don't have a chance in hades of passing their cap and tax scheme, they are going to use the EPA to call CO2 a  poisonous gas so that they can regulate and tax it that way.

By hook or by crook....
